碩士 === 國立中山大學 === 音樂學系研究所 === 106 === Music narrative is using music to express emotions in a descriptive fashion. Music cannot describe events as accurately as words, however, by applying it a title and program which can then give music specific meaning and arrangement, music can “tell stories”. Through such means, listeners can understand the emotions it expresses, thus, receive composers’ intention. Some composers incorporate their personal viewpoints and interpretations to construct the musical narrative for a specific story, creating a “personal musical narrative” that serves as a guide to shape and develop the music, making the music (the story) more particular and distinct. This thesis will analyze two pieces, kipakim and Aspiration. Kipakim is based on a Paiwan poem which contains various scenarios, these scenarios are expressed through different ways of presenting the instruments which then create a musical poem. Aspiration has a fictional narrative that guides the unfolding of the music. It tells a story of a traveler pursuing his/her own aspiration. By telling story through music, the author wishes to combine narrative and the aesthetic sense of music. In this way, what composers intend to express shall be received by the listeners more easily and directly.
