| Summary: | 碩士 === 國立中山大學 === 中國文學系研究所 === 106 === This paper seeks to adopt a diachronic and synchronic approach to examine Chinese poetry written aboard eastbound voyages to Japan during Japanese Ruling Period. A diachronic approach is adopted to sort a selection of poetry written by Taiwanese literati during their journey under three distinct phases of Japanese colonial rule, in order to extract their world view during Japanese Ruling Period. After experiencing the painful cessation of Taiwan to Japan, Taiwanese literati embarked upon a trans-border voyage to Japan. Step-by-step, the paper follows their eastbound journey to Japan: Pre-departure → Departure → Observations during the voyage → Ruminations → Return Voyage. Readers may witness Japan’s advanced society, rich cultural history, famous landmarks and scenery through the eyes of twelve poets and literati, and watch how these observations and ruminations subsequently shaped their world view, in order to finally understand what they truly thought of Japan, their colonizing country.
Then, the paper adopts a horizontal, synchronic approach of poetic classification upon the poetry to explore what the poets and literati collectively felt and thought and about five main areas: ‘departure to Japan’, ‘display of cultural scenery’, ‘tour of historical sites and monuments’, ‘gazing upon the natural scenery and landscape’, and ‘trans-border trauma of Shimonoseki’. This approach adds depth and richness to make up for the somewhat meager diachronic observations of a single poet. Finally, through the study of the poets’ voyage to Japan during the period of Japanese colonization, the paper seeks to distill and summarize the discoveries and revelations of poets from their poetry after their return from Japan.
