It is hoped that the thinking framework of the process constructing the indicators can serve as a reference for other counties and cities, and the indicators constructed can facilitate the subsequent development of county-based curriculum and become a local educational characteristic.
This study is conducted through the collection, analysis, and discussion of relevant theoretical references at first and further raised the preliminary indicators of placed-based educational characteristics of Penghu County. Afterwards, nine domestic experts and scholars, as well as on-site educational principals, were invited to evaluate the relevance of the indicator content and assist in making revisions, which eventually led to a complete pre-test questionnaire.
This study is carried out through a questionnaire survey. The formal questionnaires covered the teachers from all elementary and junior high schools (including the principals, teachers with administrative tasks, teachers parallelly covering subject and homeroom duties, and subject teachers) in Penghu County, except for those responding the pre-test questionnaires. Of the 704 questionnaires sent out, 606 were returned, containing 597 valid copies, of which the effective rate was 84.80%. The data obtained from returned valid questionnaires are analyzed and processed through descriptive statistics, independent-sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation, canonical correlation analysis and structural equation modeling. The results of the study are as follows.
1.The indicators of place-based educational characteristics of Penghu County can be divided into three major realms —namely humanities society, ocean and locial ecology, and ocean and industrial economy —, nine levels and thirty-six indicators.
2.The indicators of place-based educational characteristics in Penghu County constructed by this research are of good faith and validity.
3.Of the indicators of place-based educational characteristics, teachers from the elementary and junior high schools in Penghu County have an upper intermediate awareness of the importance, among which the highest awareness is present in the ocean and natural ecological realm and the lowest one in humanities society.
4.Of the indicators of place-based educational characteristics, teachers from the elementary and junior high schools in Penghu County have an intermediate awareness of the present circumstances, among which the highest awareness is present in the ocean and natural ecological realm.
5.Of the indicators of place-based educational characteristics, teachers from the elementary and junior high schools in Penghu County show a significantly higher perception of the importance than that of the present circumstances, and the biggest difference is present in the realm of the ocean and industrial economy.
6.The magnitude of awareness towards the importance of the place-based educational characteristics is significantly higher in teachers from the elementary schools than that in those from junior high schools in Penghu County.
7.The teachers and principals in elementary schools which have a school size less than 6 classes and are located in outlying islands have a significantly higher magnitude of awareness towards the present circumstances of the place-based educational characteristics.
The findings and conclusions drawn from the survey study are hoped eventually to provide effective suggestions and references for the central and local governments, schools and future relevant researches.
