Consequently, available bandwidth for mobile networks becomes one of the important indicators for mobile operators Currently most of estimation technologies of the available bandwidth in mobile networks rely on the active measurement, which actively sends data to get estimate and results in the consumption of available bandwidth. In contrast to active measurement, passive measurement only passively receives data to make estimation of available bandwidth and the corresponding literatures are limited. In this thesis, existing active and passive measurement technologies are used to estimate the available bandwidth and their performances are evaluated. In addition, two technologies based on passive measurement are proposed, which are passive Bulk Transfer Capacity and passive Packet Train Dispersion, respectively. Currently most of estimation technologies of the available bandwidth in mobile networks rely on the active measurement, which actively sends data to get estimate and results in the consumption of available bandwidth.
