Sangrovit (SGV) is a phytobiotic feed additive extracted from Macleaya cordata. It has been shown to facilitate appetite and retard inflammation. Such actions may help nutrient utilization by weaned kids. In this study, kids were supplemented with SGV in diet and collected data for growth performance, digestibility, plasma characteristic, and metabolism. In Stage 1 (age 14-20 weeks), SGV-WS (120 mg/head/d) was added to water and fed by bottle. Concentrate feeding was restricted (1.6 % body weight). Water was for ad libitum. In Stage 2 (age 22-29 weeks) and Stage 3 (31-38 weeks), addictive SGV-RS (53.2~65.5 mg/head/d) was mixed in concentrate. Feeding of concentrate (1.7 and 1.2 % body weight) and straw (0.5 and 0.55 % body weight) feeding was also restricted. In Stage 4 (age 39-45 weeks), SGV group was without SGV, concentrate (1.2 % body weight) and straw (0.7 % body weight) feeding remained restricted. Results indicated that the daily gains of kid in Stage 1 (22.6 vs. 34.3 g/d)、2 (69.9 vs. 65.7 g/d)、3 (26.0 vs. 46.4 g/d) and 4 (68.1 vs. 80.4 g/d) were not significantly different. Daily gain over Stages 1 to 3 (39.5 vs. 48.8 g/d) and daily gains of over Stages 1 to 4 (46.7 vs. 56.7 g/d) increased by more than 18% by SGV, but did not reach statistical difference. Over the entire trial, SGV group had a lower plasma creatinine concentration (P<0.05), suggesting an improvement in stress condition. There was no significant difference in total digestive nutrient digestibility between the two groups of goats (Stage 3), kid supplemented with SGV had higher (P<0.1) digestible protein intake corrected for metabolic body weight. There was no treatment effect on nitrogen excretion, proportions of nitrogen excretion relative to intake or digested N, and urine volume. Body weight of goats supplemented with SGV increased (P<0.01). After cessation of SGV (Stage 4), there was no significant difference in the total digestive nutrient digestibility of the kid between the two groups. After adjusting for metabolic weight, the kid in the SGV group still had a higher trend of digestible protein intake (P<0.1). Nitrogen output and proportions of nitrogen excretion relative to intake or digested N were not effected.
