The purpose of this study was to explore the marital adjustment among couples seeing a therapist due to situational couple violence. This study also compaired changes in their marital adjustment in terms of cognitions, affective emotions and coping behaviors. Two pairs of couples were invited to participate in this study. According to the qualitative research approach, the data were collected by semi-structured depth interviews and were analyzed by adopting the method of content analysis. According to interview materials, cognitive, emotional and behavioral changes made by each individual were discussed. Conclusively, developmental stages of marital adjustment and two processes of marital adjustment were presented. Development stages of marital adjustment consist of pre-adjustment stage, violence stage, cognitive adjustment stage, intervention stage, adjustment stage and post-adjustment stage. Processes of marital adjustment are the process of oppositional resistance – adjustment – interactive integration and the process of oppositional resistance – adjustment – opposition.
