Kampar, found in 1887, was a village rich in tin mine in Kinta Valley, Malaysia. Though residents are mostly Chinese today, it used to have two influencial French organizations:Societé Anonyme des étains de Kinta(S.E.K)and the Missions Etrangères de Paris(MEP). In ethnographic aspect, this study consists of the French history in Kampar, their influenses, and the memory. Basing on the news and archieves, first part talks about the past. S.E.K was the oldest European tin company and hired more than 15,000 workers. S.E.K’s effects include technological improvement and change on landscape. The Second part relies more on the oral memory to discuss the interaction between French and local people, the process of localization of Roman Catholic religion and their educational distribution. However, the company and the Catholic school closed in the 1970’s owing to a series of policies. French people left Kampar. The French was forgotten and mixed up with the British. The last part focuses at the gap between the past and today. In conclusion, the local memory was replaced as a result of the competition of Nationalism between the Chinese and the Malay.
