Overtime, unreasonable nurse-patient ratios and low practice rate may bring medical environment worries. Owing to the progress of human technology, more and more modern medical instruments are commonly used to assist medical personnel in medical treatments. However, without a systematic integration to the existing hospital information system (HIS), most of the instruments may increase more workload on the nursing personnel. For example, two-step operation may be required to save the medical data to a temporary disk and then update the medical data to the HIS in an offline manner. The inconvenience may cause the overwork of nursing personnels and the decline of medical quality. To solve this problem, in this thesis, we propose xBridger to bridge between a generic medical instrument and the existing HIS. xBridger provides multiple I/O interfaces, such as USB, WiFi, etc, and various application programming interfaces (APIs), such as xB_config(), xB_send(), xB_recv(), etc. Though these APIs, xBridger can synchronize the medical information obtained from the medical instrument, with an immediate module, xServer, installed on the HIS, as an endpoint of client via the cooperation of communication interfaces and network file system (NFS). xServer is a virtual server interface, coexisting with the HIS. It is used to share the workload of the communication and synchronization between HIS and xBridger, and provides a uniform way of aggregating and processing medical information, before updating data to HIS. We implement xBridger on Xilinx ZC702, virtualize the USB communication flow with Linux Gadget Framework, and provide functions of communication, to get through the I/O interfaces between USB and WiFi. We connect the Xilinx ZC702 to the USB port of the medical instrument, Stryker SDC3, and xServer installed on HIS, and that make the nursing personnel be able to update the medical information with the traditional operating procedure of obtaining data from a USB disk.
