| Summary: | 碩士 === 國立交通大學 === 音樂研究所 === 106 === The thesis aims to analyze and interpret Baal Shem: Three Pictures of Chassidic Life composed by Ernest Bloch in 1923. The analysis of the work is preceded by an introduction to Bloch’s background and creative techniques and styles. It is also supplemented by an overview of the evolution of the Chassidic movement and features of Chassidic music.
The first part of the thesis offers a general summary of Block’s biography and major style periods of his composing life. The second part discusses the characteristics of Jewish music, based on which an in-depth analysis is made on the styles and features of Chassidic music. Together, the first and second part of the thesis set the context for the analysis of and interpretation on Baal Shem in the third part.
It is hoped that the thesis can serve as a conduit for conveying the composer’s creative philosophy and in turn suggest playing techniques closer to the composer’s musical language.
