| Summary: | 碩士 === 國立政治大學 === 傳播學院傳播碩士學位學程 === 106 === Taiwanese Indigenous Peoples' subject position and historical discourse have long been manipulated by colonial rulers and the Han Chinese. “Sayun Incident”, which took place in 1938, is a very representative example. And many derivative texts have appeared one after another, among which the film Sayon no Kane (サヨンの鐘, 1943) has attracted the most attention. Owing to the development of the indigenous movements and ethnic communication right, Finding Sayun (2011) is not only the first feature film directed by Taiwanese Indigenous Peoples, but also the first interpretation of “Sayun Incident” according to the perspective of the Atayal in Nan'ao. Therefore, this film is of considerable significance and value.
This study adopts discourse analysis to research into historical representation and cultural significance of “Sayun Incident”. My findings indicate: (a) Under the operation of the colonial ideology and social authority structure, the film Sayon no Kane distorts the social reality by portraying Taiwanese Indigenous Peoples as “the domesticated other”, and further constructs their cultural identities. (b) The film Finding Sayun reveals that Taiwanese indigenous female director, Laha Mebow, applies or remodels the connotations of “Sayun Incident”. Moreover, it manifests the multiple historical memories and interwoven cultural identities by the unusual discourse strategies.
