Recently, the rise of Industry 4.0 forming connection between digital and physical technologies in increasing productivity and reducing inventory is driving transformation revolution of manufacturing. Internet of Things (IoT), one of Industry 4.0 ingredients, describes the tight network of assets, processes, products and people. R&D function in chemical industry falls behind the wave of digital transformation. Chemistry laboratories have little changed for decades. Especially the communication of R&D today, data are transferred manually by paper-based or by single file based. A platform linking seamlessly between data and hardware could streamline work process and potentially improve R&D productivity and effectiveness. Starting with managing chemical reagents, the basic elements in a chemistry laboratory, research professionals could easily control inventory level of chemical reagents, improve workflow efficiency, comply commitment to Environment and Health and Safety (EH&S) responsibilities through a cloud-based management software enabled by RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) based smart cabinets as the starting point of R&D digitalization.
