Since the year 2006, the high demand for long-term care human resources resulted in many colleges in Taiwan to open more courses that specialize in the elderly and long-term care. Unfortunately, according to yearly evaluations, many new graduates do not choose to work as a certified nursing assistants’. Due to the lack of research regarding new graduates’ employment status; therefore, the purpose of this current study is to understand the academic motivation and experience of new graduates. Methods:This current study uses Qualitative descriptive research to collect and analyze data. Through the Snowball sampling technique, the research participants include nine people who have graduated from long-term care management related departments are either a or have been a certified nursing assistants’. The interviews were conducted from April, 21, 2018 to July, 1, 2018; the duration of each interview was 20 to 50 minutes. Result: In conclusion, the most popular academic motivation for the participants is due to family, “a past experience of caring for family members” and “growing up with grandparents”. There has been a mention of college teaching “being irrelevant to workplace situations” or that “there’s a gap between the academic system and the college itself”. The participants have highlighted the fact that what they find most frustrating as a certified nursing assistants’ would be that “the bonus and promotion standard is unclear in their workplace”, it challenges their faith in whether staying in their current field is beneficial for their career plans. For those who decide to remain as a certified nursing assistants’ are motivated by “the positive feedback from seniors in their workplace”. As for required abilities to be a certified nursing assistants’, participants think that “having a class C skill is mandatory”, “sufficient skills in nursing”, “a certain flexibility when interacting with seniors”, “adequate Taiwanese ability”, and “a positive attitude when caring for seniors”, are important skills to have. Recommendations: According to the current study, there are three main concerns that require attention. Firstly, it’s recommended that every workplace provides certified nursing assistants’s a definite promotion and bonus standard to follow. This would attract more nursing assistants’s from long-term care related departments to continue working for long-term care institutions. Secondly, it seems imperative that long-term care related departments provide additional sessions for students to understand their options and explore their career planning before graduation. It’s vital that the lectures are accessible throughout each semester. Academic courses and internships should be designed and routinely updated with unambiguous guidelines. Lastly, it’s essential that further research is conducted to understand the reasons for new graduates from long-term care related departments to be reluctant in working as a certified nursing assistants’.
