At present, the surface defect inspection of mirror stainless steel in the manufacturing process still depends on visual inspection, but its inspection environment belongs to a high-risk environment. Therefore, the automatic inspection system for mirror stainless steel was developed in this study. In order to reduce the influence of its reflective properties on defect inspection, a hemispherical dome with light sources inside was developed as an inspection environment to provide uniform illumination. And the optical simulation software is also used to simulate the lighting distribution within the inspection system. The simulation results show that the uniformity of illumination at the LED angle of 0, 45 and 90 degrees are 0.985, 0979 and 0.976, respectively. A dark field which is created at the symmetrical position of the camera is useful to identify the defects on the mirror stainless steel plate. The inspection system can inspect the minimum area of dent defect of 0.188 mm2, and it also suitable for inspecting the surface defect of the mirror stainless steel plate with oil droplets or oil film.
