The associated techniques such as physical part scanning and surface recreation are explained in great detail. Whole scale Reverse Engineering were conducted for four real pieces: A computer mouse, a telephone handset, a spray bottle and a bicycle seat frame.
From Prepare the real piece for scan, scan into point cloud with a laser scanner, open the scan file in RE software, editing the original data, create corresponding curves from the model, create surfaces, edit, stitch and complete the surface model, convert into 3D solid model, export to the format other software can open, until use other CAD software to verify the availability of the CAD file recreated through the procedure. Four 3D CAD models were created successfully within acceptable accuracy.
After finished the reverse, change to materials and get a comparison result from simulation. Comparison of carbon fiber VS steel. Results is carbon fiber softer and stronger than steel.
Moreover, from the 3D model obtained with RE, Computer Aided Engineering analysis was conducted for one of the piece: the bicycle seat frame. The advantage of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic material was investigated compared to conventional stainless steel part. The results showed the displacement with the use of CFRP is 4 times less, the factor of safety is 5 times better, and the weight is approximately 7 times less in comparison to the ones with conventional stainless steel. It’s apparent that with the application of reverse engineering on the existed product, the improvements of that product is much easier and faster which is very suitable for the industry.
