Many studies have indicated that resistance exercise helps to improve the symptoms of muscle weakness, pain and stiffness in patients with knee Osteoarthritis. Purpose: There are several advantages of elastic band, such as light cheap, easy to obtain, and adjust with prodigious, we expect that the intervention of elastic band resistance exercise will improve the exercise frequency and the lower limb muscle endurance in elderly patients with diabetic osteoarthritis, and could have better results in blood glucose control and life performance.
Methods: There are 60 patients aged between 60 to 70 years with diabetes mellitus and knee osteoarthritis were recruited in this study. The subjects were evenly divided into two groups: band group and the control group. We taught knee joint movement and elastic band resistance exercise in the band group; taught the knee joint movement and isometric contraction training in the control group. After 12 weeks intervention of home training, we evaluated the blood glucose, lower extremity functions, dynamic balance, and WOMAC functional scales between two groups. Outcomes: After 12 weeks of resistance exercise training, it was found that no significant improvement in blood sugar and Low Density Cholesterol (LDL) between two groups; however, we found that the lower limb muscle strength, dynamic balance and detail or total of the WOMAC function assessment (pain, stiffness, Physical function) had significant improvement between two groups the elastic band group better than the control group). Conclusion: The results of this study shows that the effectiveness of interventional exercise training program for diabetic patients with knee osteoarthritis does not reach the expected effect, but there is still have improvement potential. The significant improvement result of lower limb function could improve the quality of life indirectly. It is suggested that we can encourage the patients to carry out this home exercise measure in the future. Nai-Jen Chang 張乃仁 2018 學位論文 ; thesis 116 zh-TW
