In the past, for hand-held mobile devices, general SISO TRP and TIS measurements of antenna performance were performed in the anechoic chamber to confirm the overall transmission and reception performance. Nowadays, not only consider SISO, but also the measurement and verification of the highest priority “receiver throughput” of MIMO is required. This is to confirm whether it will be affected by the number of antennas, isolation and surrounding components in the limited device space. The existing 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and the CTIA organization both provided measurement methods and procedures for MIMO OTA in free space condition. This article will not only focus on the measurement of free-space MIMO OTA throughput performance in free space, but also consider the impact of the placement about different positions in the left or right hand for actual human usage. In the end of article, it will show comparison and analysis of deviation values. The results will be provided to certification organizations and telecom operators to define the specification for the operating mode of handheld mobile device in the future and allows manufacturers to consider the importance of the antenna placement during the design phase.
