Summary:碩士 === 玄奘大學 === 應用心理學系碩士班 === 106 === This research aims to probe into the situations of work adjustment on the male, in which the men’s gender role stereotype constructed under paternalism, the difficulties they encounter at work, the strategies they apply when dealing with difficulties at work are taken into consideration. A narrative research in qualitative approach was adopted in this research, and the olistic—content and categorical—content were applied as the data analysis method. The research integrated three male counselors’ working experiences, and the results of the analysis were concluded as the men's gender role stereotype constructed under paternalism, the difficulties they encounter at work, the strategies they apply when dealing with difficulties at work. The research findings were listed as the followings statement stated. First, the men's gender role stereotype constructed under paternalism. It indicated the following statements: male’s status, emotional suppression, masculine interpersonal interaction, the shackling of marriage, the huge differences of male and female, patriarchal thinking. Second, the difficulties they encounter at work. 1. Struggling for obtaining status: working at non-traditional gender profession, male counselors would pursue the achievement in order to enhance their masculinity. 2. Emotional suppression: emotional suppression holds back male counselors’ practical works, and interpersonal interaction. 3. Male counselors in the feminism group: most of the counselors are females, as males would feel quite difficult in joining the feminism group, they would encounter difficulty when they are trying to avoid building up the relationship with someone in the masculine ways. 4. Marriage and work: due to the society expectation that male counselors have to raise up the family, they make themselves head into earning money. 5. Male only physical work: when male counselors perceive that it is the phenomenon made by gender role stereotype that cannot be agreed, it would make them feel conflicted. 6. Patriarchal thinking: it would decrease male counselors’ learning chances if patriarchal thinking makes them be obedient only to the male directors. Besides, it would be burdens for male counselors due to the cause that the public trust the profession of male counselors more and the public would ask them to give advices. Third, the strategies male counselors apply when dealing with difficulties at work. Male counselors applied the strategies of ‘changing ability’, ‘changing value’, or ‘selfadjustment’ in the dilemma of struggling for obtaining status; they would apply ‘changing ability’, ‘self-adjustment’ in the dilemma of emotional suppression; they would adopt the strategies of ‘changing ability’, and ‘changing value’ in the male dilemma of being in the feminism group; they would adopt the strategy of ‘changing value’ in the dilemma of marriage and work; they would apply the strategy of ‘obedience’ in the dilemma of male exclusive work; and they would all adopt the strategy of ‘changing value’ in the dilemma of traditional idea of patriarchal thinking. In accordance with research findings, related opinions and suggestion were presented at the end of this research for the references of professional counselors, co-workers, and future researchers.
