碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 跨文化研究所翻譯學碩士班 === 106 === A translator’s personal account is a published work in which translators write about the experiences of their career and reflections on it. Through writing, translators can not only express themselves, but shape people’s perception of translators and the translation profession, thus changing the image perceived by others and reconstructing the reality of translation. In this study, eight books by seven translators are analyzed. The aim is to take a look at the translators’ personal accounts and determine how they serve the authors themselves, the general public and other translators. After an introduction in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 reviews research on relevant themes including the self-presentation of translators, memoir as a genre, the status of translators and paratext theory. Chapter 3 introduces the authors and discusses the similarities between them. Chapter 4 is dedicated to the motives why translators write personal accounts. Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 explore the potential effects of the accounts both on the general public and translators as a whole, especially their contribution to an understanding of translation and translators and how such accounts affect translators’ self-understanding. Chapter 7 summarizes the main points of the study and offers some advice to future researchers.
