The purpose of this study is to understand why housing residents with or without the use of roof space, the investigation of user activity patterns, on the roof to create those different environment, and their relationship through the essence of social elements and defining the area, and compare the difference in different types of residential buildings on the issue of. In this study, a qualitative field survey was conducted to explore the use of the domestic roof space, and to understand space forms by shooting space photographs and drawing a plane map. The semi-structured interview subjects were mainly residential residents. According to the types of buildings, they were divided into two categories: apartment type roof space users and community mansion type roof space users. The purpose of the interview is to understand residents' interaction patterns and spatial usage patterns with roof space, so as to explore the connection between residents and roof space and residents' cognition of publicity, and analyze whether there are different publicness with different housing types. It is found that the apartment type roof space is low under the elevator equipment, and the social nature is low. Community building roof space for households, accessibility to the height of the community management and other conditions, the roof space is gradually establish a new society. After comparing the field data of two kinds of residential roofs, the following conclusions can be drawn: first, the publicity of roof space presents multiple meanings; the form of roof space coordinated by the residents is recognized by the public. Two, according to the different patterns of space use, the publicness of roof space can be specifically shown in five categories: safety, convenience, recreation, productivity and social interaction. Three, there are different degrees of "sociality" in the different use of roof space. The roof space with high social performance shows more positive space, and there are more users. The roof utilization of these cases is mostly influenced by the government's roof reward policy. This paper suggests that when planning and managing the roof space of collective housing, the government and the development designer should consider the different needs of apartments and buildings, make the use of space more maneuverable and establish the commonality of all kinds of houses.
