He showed great talent in music from his childhood. At the time of composing Images I, he was interesting in experimenting with various sounds and visual impressions. There are always a lot of imagination in mind when listening to Debussy's works. This study examines three piano compositions from Debussy's Images I: Reflets dans 1'Eau, Hommage à Rameau, and Movement. It provides background on Debussy's creative materials and explores the similarities and differences of these three pieces. In addition, it analyzes the compositional and pianistic techniques, scales, harmonic language, and the foreshadowing of Impressionism in Images I. At last, it will summarize the effect Impressionism had on Debussy's music and suggest the fingering and pedaling in the performance. There are five chapters in the thesis. The first chapter is an introduction. The second chapter is Debussy's life and the style of his works: background of his growth and development of the impressionist thought. Besides, it explains Images I was composed under the influence of certain circumstances. The third chapter is the analysis of Debussy’s piano music Images I. According to the forms, harmonies, melodies, rhythms and scales, it analyzes and compares the similarities and differences of these three pieces. The fourth chapter is the interpretation of Images I. Based on the previous research, this chapter proposes the interpretation on performance and the suggestions of fingering and pedaling. The fifth chapter is the conclusion.
