This study utilizes data provided through the assistance of the National Science Council. Included in the analysis are the relative impact of the husband’s and wife’s relationships with in-laws on marital quality and the relative impact of self-evaluation and spousal evaluation of relationships with in-laws on marital quality. This study contains a valid sample size of 890, or 445 couples. Through techniques including descriptive statistical analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression, this study arrives at the following conclusions: 1.The wife’s marital satisfaction is significantly impacted by the length of the marriage, her self-evaluation, and her relationship with in-laws. The wife’s opinion of marital stability is significantly mpactednegatively by frequency of conflict with in-laws. Analysis of spousal evaluations reveals that the impact of the husband’s evaluation of his wife’s relationship with in-laws on the wife’s view of marital quality disappears after introducing the wife’s evaluation of her husband’s relationship with in-laws. The husband’s self-evaluation of his relationship with in-laws also has significant impact on the wife’s view of marital quality, signifying that husband and wife both value a positive relationship between the husband and his in-laws, even more so than the husband’s evaluation of the wife’s relationship with her in-laws. 2.The husband’s view of marital quality is impacted by the wife’s relationship with in-laws; when the evaluator is the husband (and not the wife), the husband’s view of marital stability is significantly impacted negatively by the frequency of conflict between wife and in-laws. The wife’s self-evaluation of frequency of conflict with in-laws and relationship with in-laws has no impact on the husband’s marital satisfaction or marital stability. The husband’s view of marital quality is impacted not only by his own evaluation (whether of his own relationship or his wife’s relationship with in-laws), but also the wife’s evaluation of his relationship with in-laws. 3.Overall, the impact of the wife’s self-evaluation of relationship with in-laws and the husband’s evaluation of his wife’s relationship with in-laws becomes no longer significant after introducing the wife’s evaluation of her husband’s relationship with in-laws. This signifies that while the husband’s evaluation of his wife’s relationship with in-laws is important, the wife’s evaluation of her husband’s relationship with in-laws and her self-evaluation are even more important factors in determining the wife’s marital satisfaction and feeling of stability.
