When the engineering management staff needs to conduct safety inspections and check the construction quality of the viaduct, if the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) can be used as auxiliary tools, the overall construction quality and safety of the viaduct will be considerably improved during the life cycle of the construction. In view of this, the study will first analyze a real case of civil works of the viaduct, followed by interviews with product management staff to help them understand and acknowledge the application efficiency of using UAV as auxiliary tools. Lastly, based on the study of correlation between the problems deprived from the project management and actual enforcement, a strategy will be presented as how to improve the future application of UAV. The study found out that the fundamental reason of the cost increase during civil works of the viaduct is because the project management fails to have full control of the construction status, which in turn causes the misjudgment in the pre-planning and post-management. In addition, the use of UAV auxiliary tools can help identify potential problems, used for on-job training purpose, and decrease the loss from inadequate appraisal in the bidding and the managing inconvenience results from the insufficient project. Furthermore, UAV auxiliary tools can better provide information through all phases of the construction, prevent extra cost and increase profit. For the short term strategy, during the planning and design stages of the viaduct construction, UAV auxiliary tools can identify potential risk on site and gather unfavorable factors. For the mid-term strategy, during the construction of the viaduct, use UAV auxiliary tools to help with the management level in the area of schedule control, material, quality and follow-up operation, to ensure easier management and more accurate estimate in cost. For the long term strategy, it is advised to use UAV auxiliary tools during the life cycle of the viaduct construction, and use its features and future development to solve and improve project management.
