The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the “Air Quality Index (AQI) policy” promoted by the government on campus physical education (PE) courses. Based on students’ cognition of the AQI policy and satisfaction with the policy, this study explored students’ satisfaction with PE courses implemented under the AQI policy and also examined the moderating effect of sport passion. The subjects were students of six junior high schools in Taichung City. Data was collected using the questionnaire survey method, and participants were selected based on purposive sampling. A total of 568 valid responses were collected, and the valid response rate was 87.38%. The analytic methods used in this study included descriptive statistics, reliability and validity analyses, Pearson's correlation analysis, and regression analysis. Results indicated that policy cognition was positively and significantly related to policy satisfaction; policy recognition was positively and significantly related to satisfaction with PE courses; policy satisfaction was positively and significantly related to satisfaction with PE courses; sport passion negatively moderated the relationship between policy cognition and satisfaction with PE courses to the extent of significance; sport passion had a significantly negative effect on the relationship between policy satisfaction and satisfaction with PE courses. The above findings showed that when sport passion was considered, the effects of AQI policy cognition and AQI policy satisfaction on satisfaction with PE courses varied significantly with the decline of sport passion. Hence, it was highly agreed among the junior high school students in Taichung City that PE courses should be implemented with consideration of AQI, and one of the invisible effects of the AQI policy was an increase in students’ sport passion, which could weaken the effects of AQI policy cognition and AQI policy satisfaction on satisfaction with PE courses. In other words, students who were fond of sports were the most affected group under the AQI policy. Results of this study could be a reference for makers and implementers of the AQI policy. The coping measures currently adopted by schools in response to the AQI policy have virtually caused an effect on students’ sport passion. Hence, the various potential effects of the AQI policy should be more carefully addressed. This is also an issue that deserves more in-depth research by future researchers.
