Using instant messengers (IM) on mobile phones has become normal for interpersonal communication purpose. This trend not only changes the way adolescents live, but also affects their interpersonal interactions. This study aims to investigate whether the use of IM by adolescents affects their interpersonal interactions and real interpersonal relationships, and to verify whether the living areas in which adolescents live moderate the above-mentioned effects. In this study, students from grade 7 and grade 8 in the junior high school of Shinchu city and Pingtung county were selected to represent urban and rural samples respectively. A total of 469 effective samples were collected through an online survey. The data were tested by SPSS 22.0 and Amos 21.0 for reliability and validity analysis, descriptive statistics, measurement models and structural models. Results showed that: (1) About 60% junior high school students used IMS every day. Among them, Facebook Messenger is the dominant type. Usages of instant messaging software IM had lasted more than two years averagely. 46% of respondents used IM for about one hour each time. The most commonly used functions were calls and videos. (2) The use of IM by junior high school students had a positive effect on the disclosure of network intimacy and information disclosure. (3) The use of IM by junior high school students had a positive effect on the relationship between family members, peers and teachers. (4) Internet interpersonal interaction had a positive influence on real interpersonal relationships. (5) The effect of the use of IM on the interpersonal interactions and real interpersonal relationships was not moderated by urban and rural areas. Based on the results, it is obvious that the use of IM has direct and indirect positive impacts on the interpersonal relationships of junior high school students. It is suggested that parents of adolescents should guide their children to use IM in order to manage personal relationships. In addition, school teachers can integrate IM into class management to create a harmonious environment for teachers and students.
