To show one’s uniqueness, plain photos may not be the best option, which explains the trend that some people seek to convey individual style by transforming a photo or an image into a painting by softwares. The purpose of the study is to investigate how to use softwares to create painterly photos; the study can be divided into three parts: first, to analyze the technical features of automatic painting softwares; second, to enquire into the characteristics of famous watercolor landscape paintings and watercolor building paintings; third, to contribute to an illustrative work combining the technical features of automatic painting softwares and the characteristics of famous watercolor paintings on the subjects of landscape and building. The study relies on literature review to sort out the technical features of automatic painting softwares. The artistic style of the above-mentioned watercolor paintings by Japanese artist Abe Toshiyuki, Polish illustrator Mateusz Urbanowicz and Taiwanese artist Chien Chung-Wei is defined by applying the method of formalistic approach. The study result shows that the automatic painting softwares require a rather high level of resolution and contrast of the imported image, while the famous watercolor landscape paintings and watercolor building paintings stress on the quality of light and shadow, connection between building and nature, and additional human figures from a prime lens point of view, which are associated with a semi-figurative and impressionistic style with visible strokes.
