Metabolic syndrome is thought to play an important role on the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of Eucommia ulmoides extracts on Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers in animal model of metabolic syndrome. Six-week-old, male, spontaneously hypertensive (SHR, n=50) and Wistar Kyoto(abbreviated WKY, n=10) rats were divided into six group (n=10): Normal group (WKY rats); Control group (SHR); AD group (SHR rats, injected with 40 mg/kg B.W. of Streptozotocin); 133、399、665 mg/kg of Eucommia ulmoides extracts in AD rats (AD+D1、AD+D3、AD+D5), and all the rats were fed with high-fat diet to induce the model of metabolic syndrome. During the study period, blood glucose, insulin, blood pressure, and lipid profile were collected. After eight weeks of different doses of Eucommia ulmoides extracts treatment, the results showed that all the groups fed with Eucommia ulmoides extracts can significantly lower the level of blood pressure and fasting blood glucose, compared to the control group. Compared to the AD group, the level of hepatic triglycerides and hepatic cholesterol were significantly decreased in AD+D1 group. The result also showed that the beta-amyloid in hippocampus, which was the main pathologic marker in AD was significantly decreased in AD+D1 group. In conclusion, the group fed with 133 mg/kg B.W. of Eucommia ulmoides extracts can improve the metabolic syndrome and the Alzheimer’s disease-like biomarkers. Furthermore, Eucommia ulmoides extracts can be more applicable to the functional food in the future. Hui-Ting Yang 楊惠婷 2018 學位論文 ; thesis 91 zh-TW
