Decreases in the labor force each year have also affected our economic development and financial burden. According to the National Development Council, a decrease of 0.18 million labor force has occurred each year since 2016, revealing low labor force participation rate. The elderly population by 2050 is estimated to reach 7.43 million (35.7% of the total population), turning Taiwan into a hyper-aged society. Furthermore, dual stresses from low birth rate and prolonged life expectancy lead to inevitable trends as delaying retirement and continuing with labor participation. The current study aimed to examine how to enhance re-employment among the middle-aged adults. Two major issues faced by middle-aged adults in face of re-employment have been either psychological aspects or external environment, such as ageism, difficulty in job transfer, tough work environment, lack of confidence and expertise. Therefore, how to strengthen the integration of middle-aged resources and the re-employment of middle-aged labor force, and encourage delaying retirement or returning to the workplace after retirement have been vital issues to the government and the public. With the images and in-depth interviews, the current study aimed to reach construct elicitation (personal constructs, common constructs, and relevant constructs) using the Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique (ZMET), hoping to form the consensus map of re-employment in the wake of retirement among middle-aged adults and uncover their thoughts as well as final expectations. The results revealed that the initial motivation for re-employment included lacking profession, having a complete arrangement, living with dignity, staying young, and suffering from financial burden. Final expectations included realizing the dream, giving back to the society, having a sense of achievement, and pursuing happiness. The results also suggested that middle-aged adults sought for a happy, healthy, and devoted philosophy in re-employment. It is hoped that the government and companies pay more attention to the genuine thoughts from middle-aged adults experiencing re-employment, encourage delaying retirement and continuing with labor participation, and provide friendly workplace and policy regulation. Only by so doing could industry development be enhanced and global competitiveness be promoted.
