Summary: | 碩士 === 中華大學 === 科技管理學系 === 106 === With an eye on the therapeutic aspects of art education, this research explores how integrating mandala painting technique into visual arts education can benefit the creativity of junior high school students. With quasi-experimental designs, the study focuses on incorporating mandala painting into all units of Visual Arts Curriculum in accordance with current Grade 1-9 Curricula and adopts Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT) and Creativity Assessment Packet (CAP).
Spanning from September, 2017 to January, 2018, this research takes 108 students from two 7th grade classes and two 8th grade classes as objects of study and implements two 45-minute classes every week, summing up to 24 classes in 12 weeks. At the end the session, every student has 12 mandala paintings completed. The study analyzes changes on creativity and creative tendency of the students after the session and examines the feedbacks from the students through focus group interviewing. The research findings are as below:
1. Taking the therapeutic aspects of art education into consideration, integrating mandala painting technique into visual arts education can benefit the creativity of junior high school students.
2. Creativity and creative tendency of both male and female students are increased after the session, while female students are more open to this approach, resourceful in finding solutions, and thoughtful in practice.
3. Creativity and creative tendency of both 7th grade and 8th grade students are increased after the session, while the ability of 7th grade students to grasp the essence and the kernel of visual patterns improves particularly. On the other hand, 8th grade students are capable of creating more exquisite, diverse patterns.
4. Creativity and creative tendency of both students with and without special educational needs (SEN) are increased after the session, while students with SEN show more courage in defending their creative ideas, making guesses, and facing failures and criticism.
5. Most objects of study approve of integrating mandala into visual arts class and give positive responses on the learning experience.
According to the research findings, this thesis gives advice on the optimization of visual arts class of junior high school education. With this, the author offers an approach and a set of principles for instructors in the field of formal art education to accompany students in their exploration. Also, the thesis includes suggestions on course planning for art teachers regulated by the upcoming 12-year Basic Education Curricula.
