The “Taiping Old Street,” “Mountain Village Hospitality,” and “Festival and Ceremony” that appear in Chang’s literary descriptions of the 1920s come to life with visual associations in the form of a unique Taiping Mountain Village, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere surrounding the place, feel the connection between memory and architecture, reinterpret local features, and draw inspiration from the space for their own creation. This paper examines past cases of communal cultural preservation projects to illustrate how these projects present the connection between literary works and local lives, and how future scholars can draw from these experience to come up with different ways of invigorating local communities with literary works as revitalizing spatial texts. This study focuses on Chang Wen-huang literature and engages in field studies as well as textual analysis to present a literary map of Meishan, Taiping, weaving Chang’s works “Burden” and “Night Ape” into exciting tour routes for visitors. In terms of community development, the study introduces literary elements into the old streets of Taiping to start a conversation at the site of Chang’s birth through a representation of the lives and customs of Taiping found in Chang’s literary works. Lastly, this study investigates the current cultural creative micro-enterprise and the development of recreation industry in Taiping which include alley art installations with a literary theme and the Taiping Suspension Bridge. This study hopes to pave the way for the practice of deep countryside tour experience with the Meishan project which can be realized through autonomous community development combined with community landscape and literary tourism.
