The researcher used questionnaires to collect data of the 3rd to 6th graders from six elementary schools across northern, middle, and eastern part of Taiwan . There were a total of 321 participants and 56% of them are girls. The results showed that positive parenting did not affect the lying motivation directly, but it had indirect impact on self-oriented lying motivation through perspective taking. On the other hand, negative parenting had a direct influence on self- and other-oriented lying motivation. As for prosocial behavior, positive parenting had both direct and indirect impact on it. Finally, some results were found on girls only that positive parenting had indirect relations on the two lying motivations mediated by empathy. To summarize, empathy was the important mediator which affected the relation between positive parenting and lying motivation/ prosocial behavior. It implies that the individual’s cognitive and emotional ability was critical. In addition, negative parenting had an effect on both lying motivations: it promotes lying motivation. In conclusion, the research explored the effect of perceived parenting on lying motivation and prosocial behavior from children’s point of view. Future research can explore more factors that might have an impact on lying motivation. The hope is to further understand the impact and developmental trend of lying motivation from multiple facets.
