The power requirements for submarine sailing and the required power and basic conditions for underwater navigation were obtained through the review and analysis of the propulsion systems of various types of submarines. In order to assess whether the Stirling engine does have the ability to make submarine sailing and under water navigating, a power output experimental system was established. The power outputs of a domestic commercial small Stirling engine were systematically tested. While the data from the above test were extended by scaling up, it would implicated that the shipyard designer uses the Stirling engine as the submarine Air-Independent propulsion is not suitable. Therefore, the engineering drawings of the Japanese Canglong-class submarine power system was reviewed and analyzed, the results imply that some special heaters and heat accumulators should be used to improve thermal efficiency. To prove the above inference, a series of experiments were conducted to verify, the results show if there is a good heater and heat accumulator, the Stirling engine can be applied to submarine. The experimental system that can vary parameters was designed in this work and the Stirling engine’s rpm and electric output can be acquired and analyzed.
