It often being practiced together with “tea brewing”, “flower arrangement” and “picture presentation”. These “four arts of life” have been integrated into the life of scholar. Lighting incense to create an atmosphere that allows the user to experience the harmonic emotions within, which makes incense ceremony an activity that actually has a real function and can be fully utilized to enrich the ambiance to a peak level. Incense culture originated in the Spring and Autumn period in China. It was the people of Han who gradually further developed and formed a unique incense culture in history. There was evidence showing that the Chinese people already have been using incense since as early as in Song dynasty. During the period of Song, it is recorded that people enjoy life by practicing the “four arts of life” However, now a day, why the linkage of “incense” and scholar is no longer exist in the Chinese society? Why “incense” has not been one of the popular Chinese culture in the modern daily life? Taiwan is a place where Chinese cultures are well preserved. Whenever “incense” is being mentioned why it often carries an image that is related to religious ceremonies? It remains unclear why the practice has been forgotten. Has it lost with the passing eras? with the merging of different cultures? or with lacking of related literature. In view of its lost, this research aims to explore the cultural meaning of incense lighting and its expression on a spiritual level, and also discover the extinct crisis that the incense culture is facing. This research involved literature analysis, observational method, expert in-depth iii interview, and grounded theory exchange to obtain research results. Through literature analysis, we first find out the historical meaning and the art value of incense from related archives. The main research theme is to interview with experts. By using grounded theory to create and analysis interview data. We suggest six aspects should be included into the developing strategies of incense ceremony in Taiwan. (1) History and evolution of the incense culture. (2) Spiritual expression of incense (3) Establishment of a raw model (4) Refinement of incense art (5) Healthy life style orientated (6)Emphasizing the awareness of environmental protection. This research outcomes will serve as a valuable reference for the new learner. At the same, the incense ceremony culture and its historical value can be hence preserved for it to be sustainable passed on and developed.
