Every correctional institution actively promotes art and cultural activities in order to apply craft therapy to correctional programs, which can mold the mind and body of the inmates and helps them return to the society after discharge without recidivism. In this study, there are nine subjects who are inmates and disciplinarians from the talent classes at Keelung Prison. The classes include decorative lanterns, fish rubbing, and western painting for art therapy. The study uses the qualitative research method and the semi-structured interview and participant observation are the main approaches. Relevant data are collected and grounded theory is applied in this study.
After the data collected and analyzed, the result shows that the benefits gained by the inmates through the learning and creation in the art and cultural programs could be divided into short-term, mid-term, and long-term treatment effectiveness.
1.The learning effectiveness in the execution of short-term treatment strategy: a) a lasting, adaptive, and intensive correctional treatment enhances learning effectiveness; b) the emotional stability of the inmates contributes to the adaptation of the inmates to in-prison lives.
2.The mental effectiveness caused by the mid-term treatment process: a) increasing the spirit of striving for progress and emotion management skills; b) developing a positive attitude and correcting wrong values.
3.The rehabilitative effectiveness of long-term treatment: a) obtaining professional art certificates to return to the society; b) improving living skills and reduce the recidivism rates.
Lastly, from the study result and the discerning of the advantages and disadvantages
of the treatment execution and requirement, the suggestions below are offered to correctional institutions and the future researchers:
1.Suggestions to correctional institutions: a) the art and cultural programs can be set up according to the local culture and the attribute of the inmates and spread to the prisons nationwide; b) employ long-term art and craft teachers, open relevant courses and activities for counselors who afterwards can design appropriate courses without wasting time and efforts.
2.Suggestions to the future researchers: a) doing research on various types of inmates and incorporating diverse teaching materials into art and cultural courses to enhance learning effectiveness; b) the future researchers are anticipated to use different kinds of research methods and different views to examine and validate the issue discussed in the study.
