With thousands of stations, how to access channel efficiently has been an important and challenging issue. According to the IEEE 802.11ah standard, stations are partitioned into groups each with dedicated time slot for channel access. While such a group-based contention can effectively resolve contention among a large number of devices, hidden terminal problem within the same group may lead to suboptimal throughput of the network. In this paper, the IEEE 802.11ah grouping based on exposed terminal, named GET, is presented. With the GET method, associating stations keep track of neighboring exposed terminals and propose to join and form collision-free groups. Simulation results show that 20% improvement of network throughput can be achieved by GET.
