碩士 === 國立臺北藝術大學 === 美術學系碩(博)士班 === 105 === This thesis takes the author’s own paintings as its subject of research with the discussion centering on the genre of landscape painting. The author explores the sense of belonging tied to place, as well as the subtle emotional impact exerted by a particular environment on the individual. The first chapter discusses the motivation behind these creative works, the places portrayed within, the emotional state experienced in particular environments, and the means by which personal experiences are manifested in artistic creations. The second chapter outlines the history of landscape painting, reviewing its evolution in the West. As the manner in which humans observe their natural surroundings has changed, so has the style and composition of landscape paintings. To highlight the various ways that artists interpret different landscapes, the author contrasts his work with that of three contemporary artists. He also analyzes explanations of the creative process offered by these artists, exploring how individuals can experience different senses of place, and then discusses this concept as it relates to the land upon which one leads his or her life. The author emphasizes the influence that a place, itself influenced by human activity, has upon individuals and clarifies the distinct terms landscape, terrain, and place. The third chapter examines the form of two different artworks created by the author and describes the methods used to bring such artistic creations to fruition. Even though the same core concept is at play in both works, the author/artist seeks to give this concept expression through two different forms. This chapter also addresses the composition and meaning of the works. The fourth chapter focuses on future as well as current developments in painting, providing a lens through which the author’s experience of turning perceptions into artistic creations—moving from a contemplation of borders to definitions of place—can be viewed. The author circles back to ideas mentioned in the opening chapter regarding place and the role of imagination in absorbing new environments, and then concludes this thesis with a thorough discussion of the relationship between land, individuals, and place.
