The word “fairy”(yao 妖) has the original meaning of abnormality, subsequently confused with the words like “spirit” and “monster” as the creatures in human conscious that transformed from animals, plant, insects, and have the strange power(s). They speak human language, do human works, and even transform themselves to mankind. Sometimes they seem harmful. In Journey to the West, the living purposes to the fairies are: harvesting, treasure-searching, researching, power and fame, being-provided, and most representative – the living of humanity. The Spider-Spirits are the fairy who have “the living of humanity”, and the characteristic of an “ideal woman”. The Spider-Spirits transform from spider, and integrate their own character with human nature. Thus, their behaviors accord with the habit of spiders. They observe, and learn from nature. The author of Journey to the West created The Spider-Spirits as the multiple images and concepts of home (casa), waiting, yearning, girl(hood), and destruction, and combined them affluently through the techniques of a novel. Besides, the main creative idea of The Spider-Spirits is deductive with the space arrangement, and additional by the life style of The Spider-Spirits.
Fairies usually are considered as negative symbols, and treated without respect. To overturn the idea, we shall not judge by one’s birth, and count not abnormality as a sin. Respect the individuals who have their own characters, and let them grow freely – instead of regard them as tools or sacrifices. Similarly in creation, we shall not treat materials as tools but “friends”. Make the materials to show their own characters. Keep the clay with its own shape and not to wipe, for presenting the softness of the wet clay. The softness and distortion in the process of burning in the kiln are much contrary to the hardness after burning. It’s free to make the materials appear the characters themselves!
The creation and the space that base on the myth of “The Spider-Spirits” are shown by the arrangement of the exhibition. “The Spider-Spirits” live human life, and expect the coming of love. Everything is in its right place, for the Mr. Right to compose family and share life.
