Wu's acts have aroused the researcher's curiosity: what exactly made Xu's Shangui being especially remarkable? Can it embody Xu's stance toward art, the character of "Shangui" and its symbolic meaning? Currently, no research has approached above mentioned aspects, or even tried to identify the position of the artwork in the history of Chinese art. Therefore, this research's goal is to find the missing link regarding the topics to provide useful reference for related future studies. In this study, the researcher first analyzed the comments and the figure paintings of Xu Bei-Hong to identify the image Xu had tried to build for the character, as a model for other artworks with the same motif. Then, this study tried to identify how Xu brilliantly mixed the traditional meanings and forms of Chinese "Shangui" with Western realism and the characters of nude Venus. In this way, this research aims to prove that Shangui indeed presents Xu's artistic modernity, expression, aesthetic core value; the work is also an important practice of Xu's in transforming a "character" of Shangui to an "allegory" in order to better fulfill his ideal goal of achieving a "Chinese renaissance." 劉怡蘋 2016 學位論文 ; thesis 170 zh-TW
