The virtual reality has become a hot topic today. In 2016, one of the most popular mobile game-Pokémon Go blew up social media and became a pop culture phenomenon. Many researches estimate the scale of the augmented reality market will be bigger than the virtual reality market. Everyone is optimistic about development of augmented reality in the future. Therefore, this study uses patent analysis to explore the augmented reality industry. The analyzed result shows that the number of patent applications reach the peak in 2014. The Unites States holds most of the patent priority, it shows the patent landscape of augmented reality would be dominated by the United States. According to the countries of patents, United States, South Korea and Japan attach great importance to the development of the augmented reality. In terms of the augmented reality technology, the main technological development focus on the manipulating 3D models or images for computer graphics, which indicates the current expansion of the augmented reality is still to overcome the main image technology. This study can provide reference resources to understand the current situation and technology development of the augmented reality, furthermore, to facilitate the relevant industries to enter the market.
