My research is mainly divided into two parts. The first part is focused on the reaction of the 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole (Hpybim) ligand. Self-assembly of Cu(II) ions, Hpybim, and 5-nitroisophthalic acid (H2nipa) resulted in the formation of compound [Cu(Hpybim)(nipa)(H2O)]n (1). Compound [Cd2(Hpybim)2(ipa)2(H2O)2]n (2) was synthesized by the reaction of Cd(II) ions, Hpybim, and isophthalic acid on a water bath. The second part is focused on the reaction of 2-(4-thiazolyl)benzimidazole (Htbz). Compound [Cu(Htbz)(nipa)(H2O)]n (3) was produced by reacting Cu(II) ions, Htbz and H2nipa at 80 °C for 1 day. Compounds 1 and 3 were synthesized by reacting 5-nitroisophthalic acid (H2nipa), Cu(II) ions under similar reaction conditions, except that 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole (Hpybim) was used in the case of 1, and 2-(4-thiazolyl)benzimidazole (Htbz) for 3. Compound [Cd(Htbz)(hia)]n (4) was synthesized by the reaction of Cd(II) ions with Htbz and 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid (H2hia). In addition, compound {[Cu(Htbz)(Hbtc)]·H2O}n (5) was synthesized by the reaction of Cu(II) ions with Htbz and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3btc) under hydrothermal conditions at 120 °C for 5 days. These products were characterized by IR spectra, elemental analyses, powder X-ray diffractions and TGA methods. The structures of the five compounds were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analyses. Two nitrogen atoms in the Hpybim and Htbz ligands were chelated to metal center ions in compounds 1-5. Compounds 1, 2 and 3 have a 1D zigzag chain structure, while compounds 4 and 5 are 2D coordination polymers. Compounds 3, 4 and 5 have different dimensional structures that are attributed to the use of three different carboxylic acids as bridging ligands.
