Summary: | 碩士 === 慈濟大學 === 宗教與人文研究所 === 105 === Yee Der-Huey proposed his theory of ‘EOL (End-of-Life) qualitative psycho-changes’ on the ground of ontological concept and phenomenological approach. Based on his own opinion toward the studies of life and death, Yee asserted that one’s dying period is a melting process of ego mentality, represented by psycho-spiritual dual model containing four periods of physical and mental changes. This finding is quite instructive and cautionary for exploring the truth of life or death. My study is aimed to make this academic theory looks more open and understandable to the public, so that this finding can benefit and enlighten more people.
This paper will first inspect Yee Der-Huey’s life experience and then discuss his understanding to the life and death studies, by which attempt to reveal the profound meaning of ‘EOL qualitative psycho-changes’ theory. Therefore, my study will use the method of literature analysis to investigate the formation and contents of this theory. The scope is mainly focused on Yee Der-Huey’s books and related papers supplemented by other studies. My research finds that Yee Der-Huey’s own life experience is the main nutrient of this theory: from constantly paying deep attention to the issue of life and death, Yee followed a natural course to finally concentrate on the study of EOL psychology and apply his unique vocabulary to express his research findings. The phenomenological approach and numerous insights of this theory are quite different to the dominant trend and claims in academia. For examples, his core concept of psycho-spiritual dual model during one’s dying process, illustrates the feature of four changing periods on the aspect of patients’ body, mind, consciousness and social network. Furthermore, he raises a lot of insights for the first time such as marginal experience, inward-turning period, spiritual phenomenon, enlightenment at the point of death and so on. In sum, because of its multi-dimensional and integrated structure, this theory can be regarded as an outstanding manifestation in indigenous psychology as well as life and death studies.
In addition, due to Yee’s rich humanistic nature and practical personality, his theory not only owns broad vision but also is magnificent in the philosophical and literary aspect. Therefore, this theory has a cross-fields meaning in the modern society, besides the palliative care, it can be applied in other fields such as aged care, religious healing, death education and literature writing.
As Shih Shih-Ming said, Yee Der-Huey concluded this ‘EOL theory’ from the actual phenomenon. His analyses penetrate the suffering appearance of the dying patient, break through the former limits of psycho-pathology, improve the awareness of traditional psychology to the palliative care and expand new understanding and vision for bedside companionship in EOL psycho-spiritual care.
