The data was analyzed through systematic sampling method. There were four research objectives: (1) To gain a clearer picture of the motives and obstacles of participation of leisure activities for junior high school students, (2) to investigate the differences of various background variables of motives for junior high school students to participate in leisure activities, (3) to investigate the differences of various background variables of obstacles for junior high school students to participate in leisure activities, and (4) to investigate the correlation between motives and obstacles of participating in leisure activities for junior high school students. The population of the research was the students of Neipu Junior High School, Pingtung County. The method of stratified systematic sampling was adopted to collect data: 288 questionnaires are sent out, and 278 returned, with a return rate of 96.52%. After eliminating 9 void questionnaires with insufficient information, there were 269 valid questionnaires, with a valid rate of 93.40%. The research data was analyzed by SPSS for Windows 12.0 statistics software; the methods for analyzing the data were descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation, etc. It was hoped that the conclusion from this research will be able to serve as a reference for educators, governmental agencies of education, and follow-up researchers. The conclusions of this research are as follows: 1.Overall, students of Neipu Junior High School have good motives for participating in leisure sports, and the highest needs were health and psychological needs; for boys, the dimensions of social and knowledge needs were significantly higher than those for girls. 2.Overall, the greatest obstacle for students of Neipu Junior High School was the structural obstacle, and the least of the obstacle was the internal obstacle; the level of awareness for girls in the dimensions of interpersonal and structural obstacles was higher than that for boys. 3.There was a significant negative correlation between motives and obstacles of participating in leisure sports for students of Neipu Junior High School.
