The functions of A. cinnamomea in medical uses have been proven in many studies. Therefore, the price of wild A. cinnamomea is high; especially when A. cinnamomea is processed and become dripping pills. The advantages of dripping pill are good bio-availability, stability and easy to use. In this study, the A. cinnamomea cultured on basswood was harvested (1.3 kg), and then washed, extracted with alcohol, concentrated and dried. Finally, it became crude extract of A. cinnamomea (265.1 g). Next, we quantified the crude extract and mixed it with excipients and then start to make dripping pills. We prepared 5 kinds of A. cinnamomea dripping pills with different concentrations by using dropping machine (the condition was set as following, liquid temperature: 60℃, oil temperature: 55℃, 60℃ for dropping plate, 12℃ for condensate, etc.). The dripping pills were then evaluated for their triterpenoids by HPLC. We also compared our dripping pills with 6 commercial products (Abbreviated as A, B, C, D , E and F). There were typical kinds of triterpenoids were determined to evaluate the quality of samples (Antcin K, Antcin C, Antcin H, dehydrosulphurenic acid, Antcin B, Antcin A and dehydroeburicoic acid).The results showed that no peak was observed for commercial product A and B which suggested there is no triterpenoids in these two samples; while for sample F, peaks of Antcin B disappeared. Furthermore, product F had over 77.50% of non-indicator triterpenoids indicating product F could be a low-purity one. In daily life, people tend to judge the quality of A. cinnamomea by appearance and color depth; however, this is a big misunderstanding. In our study, among the 6 commercial products, sample A was dark brown in appearance; yet, no triterpenoids existing in this product. For sample E, it had all kinds of triterpenoids regardless of its light brown color. Consequently, there is no guarantee for triterpenoid quality in expensive or dark brown products. The dripping pills we prepared in this study had light brown color and tasted bitter; the typical bitter taste indicates the existence of triterpenoids which is consistent with the HPLC results.
