As the center of Taiwan’s screw industry, Gangshan Town outputs nearly 70% of screws made in Taiwan, with a global market share of 16%. Clustering shortens transportation distance and delivery time to reduce cost and selling price, and improve international competitiveness, earning Taiwan the fame of “Screw Kingdom of the World”. Screws can simply be classified into two categories: standard screws and specialty screws. The output of standard screws is high, and it is common that a machine will not need to change specifications for one whole year. However, it is different with specialty screws. Besides the frequent material and shape changes, the output volume is usually low, and it is impossible to manufacture the same type of screws in one whole year. For a machine, the time for changing specifications and re-setting everything and the expense of designing new molds can be costly. For these reasons, the economic efficiency of investments in automatic production equipment is the focus of this research. This research aims to investigate the suitability of investments in automatic production equipment for production low-volume, constantly changing specialty screws. Through comparing the degree of automation of manufacturers in the industry and analyzing product characteristics and cost efficiency, this research recommends more cautious assessments when investing automatic production equipment for specialty screws in order to maximize economic efficiency.
