Empirical study on enterprises greenwashing in Mainland China

碩士 === 東吳大學 === 國際經營與貿易學系 === 105 === In recent years, with the economy achieves growth of China, mutinational enterprises have an intense competition in Chiners market which makes emphasis upon Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) a dominant helping force of promoting competitive advantage. However, frequently spread news on violating environmental protection commitments and polution of enterprises has made people put more emphasis on environmental protection issues. Based on the definition from Karna et al. (2001), that enterprises to promote green environment strategy without actual actions, that called greenwashing. This study choose the data of greenwashing report, with 125 greenwashing events from 2010 to 2017 which is released by Southern Weekly, a weekly newspaper based in China. This study not only analyses influences of greenwashing events on enterprise performance in both long and short terms, also add variables of State-Owned Enterprises and diversification to understand if they may affect enterprise performance and use difference analysis of public traded place and the matched samples . The study further screens and analyses the samples from environmental protection issues that enterprises commited to protect environment but failed to keep their promises. The results show that greenwashing events of environmental protection issues have a significant effect on short-term performance of enterprises. If a greenwashing enterprise is a State-owned enterprises, the events will bring positive effects to the enterprise’s performance. However, if a greenwashing enterprise is a diversified, the events will bring negative effects to the enterprise’s performance. If enterprise is a listed in Hong Kong market ,the greenwashing events will brings negative significant effect on performance. Finally, this study brings out advices and more discussions regarding enterprise greenwashing.
