Summary: | 碩士 === 實踐大學 === 家庭研究與兒童發展學系高齡家庭服務事業碩士在職專班 === 105 === Diabetes self-management education includes diet, exercise, weight, drug control, self-monitoring of blood glucose, blood pressure, and foot care, which are important daily care for diabetic patients. However, some patients still lack self-management awareness and motivation. With the advent of health APPs for diabetes management, this study hopes to understand the assistance and resistance of technology intervention to health behaviors.
This is a qualitative study based on IMTOP (Intergenerational Mobile Technology Opportunities Program). 237 elderly diabetic patients had completed 8 weeks of strength training were divided into high and low APP utilization. Then, the study conducted two high and two low users’ focus groups totally with seventy-three subjects. The data was coded using category analysis, followed by scenario analysis to present the result. The results showed that APP users with high utilization have knowledge of self-management and subsequently made use of random glucose testing and the APP by themselves. On the other hand, low APP usage was attributed to perceived threats of diabetes, self-efficacy, environment, recording experience, attitude towards information technology, and perceived usefulness of the APP.
The main contribution of this study is to develop the model of diabetes self-management stages, based on which to analyze the problems and benefits of a diabetes self-management APP in treating diabetic patients. It is recommended that the personal needs of patients in different stages of diabetes self-management must be taken into account when designing the APP and health education courses. In the future, in-depth interviews and quantitative research on the diabetes self-management stages should be conducted to broaden the scope of research.
