First, a phase unwrapping algorithm was developed to resolve the phase discontinuities occurred at half-wavelength resonance frequencies, and the singularity of group delay calculations of the NRW algorithm was then eliminated. The phase unwrapping algorithm can also help recovering the reference-plane rotation of measured S_11 and S_22; the position and intrinsic S-parameters of material under test, therefore, can be accurately determined. The 7mm beadless coaxial airline was adapted as the test fixture. The permittivities and permeabilities of several dielectrics and magnetic materials were extracted by the new procedure and the conventional NRW method; and the advantages and deficiencies of both methods were compared. The extracted dispersive permittivities and peameabilities were refined by the Levenberg–Marquardt optimization method to remove the uncertainties caused by residual measurement errors.
