Even design companies are not directly in the supply chain of manufacturing industry, in the point of view of supportive role, design companies can be seen as a part of manufacturing cluster. Besides, not only local design companies, there are a decent amount of foreign design companies have located and developed in Taiwan, the process of development and the way of decision making would be totally different compared to local companies. Thus, In this study, we identified two foreign based design studio and brand (Subkarma and Vanmoof) for in-depth interviews. In order to understand the interaction detail between local manufacturing cluster and design companies. We adopted the structure of relations between cluster members by Anderson(1994) to identify the relation among different roles, also adopted multiple case study method and reviewed related industry survey literatures for investigating the development history and the relationships between foreign design studios, product manufacturers and local industrial design studios in Taiwan. The result showed that both companies have obvious interaction with local cluster in the category of “ buyer –and- supplier” relation . Even each company has their own characteristic and development, by interacting with local manufacturing companies, both have developed a certain level of “ cooperation” relation, and create their own core competitive ability and advantage. In the category of “ competitor ”, either have no direct competitor due to local marketing reason. From the point of view of “ sharing resources ”, not only the external resources(suppliers and cooperators), the most obvious transformation is the localization of internal human resources. The good labor sources in Taiwan is also become a great factor that attract foreign company to come to Taiwan.
