China has a large population base and a similar demand for medical devices. Since twenty-first century, China''s medical device industry has achieved sustained high growth along with the rapid development of social economy, the improvements of medical technology and the growing awareness of national health. In 2015, the total market size exceeded 300 billion RMB, with the average annual growth rate of more than 20%. However, due to the late start of the medical device industry, lagging behind regulatory policy, and weak technical basis of related industries, China''s medical device industry still faces strong headwinds, such as low industrial concentration, small-scale and weak innovation ability of medical device companies. Both domestic production and export volume of high-end medical equipment and implantable medical devices are still at a very low level. In today''s ever-changing technological environment and fierce global competition, China''s medical device manufacturers face tremendous competitive pressure from both domestic and international fronts. Under such circumstances, China''s medical device manufacturers need to firmly grasp the trend of the industry, exploit their own strengths and avoid weaknesses to cultivate core competencies to generate an efficient, balanced, benign and innovative development path. This thesis intends to employ a core competency based SWOT analysis to study the critical aspects of competencies and propose future initiatives to the Chinese medical device industry as exemplified by the e-business practices of Shanghai Shuangshen Medical Instrument Co., Ltd. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter, the introduction, mainly describes the research background, the research content and the research methods, and briefly introduces the research conclusion. The second chapter focuses on the market capacity, technology development trends, policy environment, and competitive pattern in Chinese implantable medical device industry. In the third chapter, the development history and business status of Shuangshen are introduced, and the external environment and internal capacity of Shuangshen Medical Instrument Co., Ltd. are analyzed through the SWOT model. Then according to the framework of core competence theory and value demand of end-users of implantable medical devices, the constituent elements of core competencies of Shuangshen are identified and evaluated. In the fourth chapter, on the basis of the above analysis, a long-term strategic objective of Shuangshen is developed, and the strategic measures of the Shuangshen to build the core competencies are explored.
