Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺東大學 === 公共與文化事務學系南島文化研究碩士班 === 104 === This thesis examines the hunting culture of Lalauran Village in Taimali Township, Taitung County, Taiwan. The study presents both the tribal oral history and my own learning experience of hunting, and aims to understand the contemporary meaning of Lalauran’s hunting culture.
The study answers three questions. First, how have the activities and locations of hunting modified in accordance with the new governance and laws of foreign authorities, and the change of economic activities? Second, what are the differences between the ethnographic records and oral history? Third, how is one being trained to be a hunter in Lalauran? This research applies the method of participant observation and the form of autoethnography.
According to the collected oral history, the hungting regulations and taboos illustrate Lalauran’s traditional knowledge of survival and sustainability, in which man is part of the nature. As acculturation takes place, not only do we see the change of tribal organization and living, but also the continuity of hunting culture. I argue that hunting, being the embodiment of fundamental value of Lalauran’s tribal culture, justifies the youth’s practice among the revitalization of tribal culture.
