Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺北教育大學 === 語文與創作學系碩士班 === 105 === This thesis focuses on pre-Tang landscape inscription, especially from the viewpoint of the relationship between the inscription and the object of engraving. The author believes that the interaction between landscapes and human beings - that is - the relationship between the landscapes and engraving does exist but not well studied yet. Hence, this study starts from reviewing the landscape being “an object of engraving” and “a sign in an article” because the nature of material and the construction of meaning of space are both important. The author wants to exam the distinctness of landscape inscription by reviewing the chosen of carrier; contexts; the action of engraving; modes of expression; comparing the traditions of inscription and other landscape poetries or rhapsodies of the same era. In order to do so, this thesis will include the investigation of three different kinds of landscape inscription, which are eulogizing, admonishing and chanting.
This study found out that first, in the inscription of eulogizing, the composers would leave a track of seeking the eternity by engraving on the stones. This behavior also delivers the eager to construct the meaning of space. Second, the inscription of admonishing is different from traditional inscriptions in the aspect of engraving, target audience, and the relationship between objects and events. In order to play as a warning, the shapes or the roads to the landscapes, which are dangerous and precipitous, are connected to the sense of fear or safety. Last but not least, there are two major modes of writing presented in the category of chants. One of them is categorical associations, which take place through bodily movement to describe scenery based on inner landscape visualized. The other one is more like chanting things. The author might use lots of literary allusions or stereotyped expressions to “explain” a mountain for chanting it. Sometimes it may beyond the empirical world and fall into imaginary space. This thesis found that landscape inscriptions do share some commons with other landscape literatures. However, the study of landscape inscriptions could be exam not only from the perspective of resemblance to external shape but also from those literary quotations or virtual topics. This is also a feature exists in landscape inscriptions that despite the looking at the language, we see the appearance. It may be taken as a self entailed characteristic of landscape inscription.
